There are several different types of vanilla frosting, but American buttercream is one of the most popular.  This version is not  too sweet, has just  the right amount of butter flavor, and  is super easy  to work with.

STEP 1 Place butter, vanilla, and salt  in a mixing bowl.

STEP 2 Beat until creamy and smooth,  about 1 to 2 minutes.

STEP 3 Press and sift powdered sugar into the bowl through a fine mesh sieve.

STEP 4 Mix the sugar into the butter at  low speed until just combined.

STEP 5 Increase the speed and whip until  light and fluffy, about one minute.
