Everything Bagel Seasoning
One of my favorite things about making everything bagel seasoning is that it is soooooo simple. All I have to do is take out pantry items I already have on hand, measure them into a jar, and shake them together. No fancy techniques or special equipment are required!
Of course, everything bagel seasoning is pigeonholed as a topping for avocado toast, but its uses go far beyond that. One of my daughter’s favorite breakfasts is when I melt butter in a skillet, sauté everything bagel seasoning in the hot butter, and then fry an egg. We also love it on popcorn, roasted vegetables, and pressed into the butter on the outside of a grilled cheese sandwich. I like to sprinkle it on this orzo pesto salad and these chicken bacon ranch sliders. You can also use it to rim cocktails, stir it into hummus, or season homemade bagel chips for a smoked salmon platter.

Ingredients For Everything Bagel Seasoning
Ingredient Notes
- Black Sesame Seeds: Contribute flavor and visual contrast.
- Dried Minced Garlic: Delivers robust garlic flavor without the moisture of fresh garlic.
- Dried Minced Onion: Has an intense onion flavor, a key component of everything bagel seasoning.
- Kosher Salt: Balances the flavors and gives a slight crunch.
- Poppy Seeds: These tiny seeds add texture and a slightly nutty, somewhat sweet flavor.
- Raw Sesame Seeds: Provide crunch and a nutty flavor.
It’s important to note that when making substitutions in recipes, the texture and flavor may be slightly different. However, these substitutes are the best options for changing the original recipe.
Ingredient Substitutions
- Black Sesame Seeds: White sesame seeds can be used, but you will lose the visual contrast.
- Dried Minced Garlic: In a pinch, garlic powder can be substituted, but it will alter the texture.
- Dried Minced Onion: Onion powder can be used, but similar to garlic, it will affect the texture.
- Kosher Salt: Any flaky salt or even Himalayan pink salt can be used.
- Poppy Seeds: Can be replaced with chia seeds, but they are crunchier and have a different flavor.
- Raw Sesame Seeds: You can use black sesame seeds if you don’t have white sesame seeds. You can also use flax seeds, but the flavor will be different.

Expert Tips
1. For a less coarse texture, grind the mixture using a mortar and pestle or pulse it a few times in a food processor.
2. For a more concentrated flavor, toast the seasoning in a dry skillet over medium-low heat. Stop when the white sesame seeds are golden and fragrant.
3. Play with the ingredient amounts to find your favorite blend.
Recipe Notes
- Use a digital kitchen scale to measure your ingredients for consistent and best results.
- Everything bagel seasoning should stay fresh for several months in an airtight container in a dark cupboard.
- The seasoning’s crunch may soften over time. To re-crisp it, toast lightly in a dry pan.
- This is a salt-forward blend; A little goes a long way. If salt is a concern, start with a smaller amount and adjust to taste.
